Why Our Work Matters

Georgia STOMP believes that a general lack of understanding about menstrual needs has led to inequity in public policy, institutions and public spaces across Georgia. Our mission is to address the issues of menstrual equity and period poverty in Georgia.

What is Menstrual Equity? Menstrual Equity is the affordability, accessibility and safety of menstrual products for all people – including laws and policies – that acknowledge and consider menstruation.

What is Period Poverty? Period Poverty is the limited or inadequate access to menstrual products or menstrual health education as a result of financial constraints or negative socio-cultural stigmas associated with menstruation.

Georgia STOMP’s work includes both non-partisan legislative advocacy, and education and implementation efforts outside the legislature. We work with organizations, policy-makers, and advocates across the state to ensure that menstruation ceases to be a barrier to an equitable society.

Specifically, Georgia STOMP works to improve access to menstrual supplies for students in school, individuals detained in the legal system and those experiencing situational poverty.

Definitions from the Glossary for the Global Menstrual Movement

The term Menstrual Equity was coined by Jennifer Weiss-Wolf to support policy efforts aimed at ending discriminatory tampon and menstrual related issues.
